Books by Racine native and Madison resident Kevin Henkes received a Newbery Honors award and the (Theodor Seuss) Geisel Award for 2014, the American Library Association announced yesterday.
Henkes’s The Year of Billy Miller was one of four works that were runners-up to the Newbery Medal winner. Hankes, the author of more than 30 books, won the Caldecott Medal (for illustration) in 2005 for his picture book Kitten’s First Full Moon. He won the Council for Wisconsin Writers’ Major Achievement Award in 2009, and CWW’s Children’s Picture Book Award in 1991 (for Crysanthemum) and in 1986 (for Grandpa and Bo), and CWW’s Juvenile Book award in 1988 (for The Zeba Wall).
Congratulations and best wishes to this supremely talented and prolific Wisconsin writer and illustrator!
Former Wisconsinite who now lives in Chicago, Amy Timberlake, also received a Newbery Honor with her book, One Came Home.
Deadline is SUNDAY, Jan. 31, for CWW contests for children’s books and other categories described at www.wiswriters.com/rules.htm.
