John Fritzell lives in Appleton, WI with his wife and two very part-time hunting dogs. A graduate of Grinnell College and employed in the financial services industry, John was short-listed in Tiny Seed Literary Journal’s Annual Chapbook Contest and a finalist in the North Dakota State University Press’ Poets of the Plains & Prairies (POPP) Chapbook Awards. Recently, John’s poems have appeared in Plainsongs, Gray’s Sporting Journal and the WFOP Calendar. His debut chapbook Thuribles was published in May by Kelsay Books.
Annette Langlois Grunseth, is published in journals and anthologies such as Wisconsin People and Ideas, Midwest Prairie Review, Dispatches Magazine (Military Writers Society of America), Poets to Come, (Walt Whitman anthology), Portage Magazine, and The Poetry Box (Portland, OR.) She has won awards for her poetry with Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters (University of Wisconsin; Wisconsin Fellowship of Poets, and The Mill, A place for Writers. She is a Pushcart Prize nominee with her book Becoming Trans-Parent: One Family’s Journey of Gender Transition and her recently released book, Combat and Campus: Writing Through War, (Elm Grove Press, 2021) is co-authored with her brother, Peter R. Langlois, where she shares his letters from the Vietnam war along with her prose and poetry in response. Following a career in healthcare marketing and public relations, she has focused on writing poetry and history. When she isn’t writing you will find Grunseth in her kayak on Wisconsin lakes or on a bike trail where her muse tags along for the exercise. GREAT LAKES WRITERS FESTIVAL

Lakeland University, Sheboygan
The Great Lakes Writers Festival is free and open to the public. The annual event, hosted by Karl Elder, Lakeland’s Fessler Professor of Creative Writing, provides seasoned and emerging writers the opportunity to talk with peers, to discuss their work, and to learn from the pros in workshops. On Thursday, November 4, there will also be a reading and reception at 7:00 pm.
This year’s featured writers are Cathryn Cofell, author of six chapbooks and two full length poetry collections, including Stick Figure with Skirt, winner of the 2019 Main Street Rag Poetry Award, and Ryan Ireland, author of novels published by Oneworld, Beyond the Horizon and Ghosts of the Desert.

NEW group at the Appleton Public Library
Every 4th Wednesday, the library is supporting a monthly, virtual group that will explore life’s big topics in poetry with the hopes of creating connections and a sense of belonging in the community.
November’s poems will be “I Wonder What You Are Thinking” by Joy Harjo. This poem can be found in An American Sunrise, by Joy Harjo and “The Hill We Climb” by Amanda Gorman. This poem is in a book by the same name.

Council for Wisconsin Writers Contest Opens Nov. 1 for Entries, deadline Jan. 31, 2022!
Wisconsin writers are invited to enter work published during the 2021 calendar year in multiple categories, including book-length poetry and a set of five poems.
First-place winners in all categories except the Young Writers Award will receive $500 and a one-week writer’s residency at Shake Rag Alley in Mineral Point WI. Honorable mention recipients will receive $50 and a one-week writer’s residency at the Painted Forest Study Center Valton WI.
