“[This is] a workshop with special emphasis on writing about place and our relationship to places of particular significance to us. Such writing might be considered an alternative kind of “mapping,” mapping that illuminates what Google Earth and Garmin and other satellite technologies can’t. It may be that in the wake of our astounding array of technologies, we still need poetry, literature, art, to fully understand and communicate where we are in the world, as well as who we are. We’ll read examples of poets writing about “place,” and do some original writing connected to place, and how it reflects and informs our identity.”
Class is open to 12

Based on the belief that poetry, in addition to being written and read, should be performed. This workshop will help educators introduce students to the topic of poetry. Participants will learn ways to help students learn brainstorming techniques, imagery and layering to write powerful and effective poems. Clear and easy poetic structures and formats empower students to expand their imaginations and cross creative boundaries. Award-winning poet Glenis Redmond will share techniques on how to help students express themselves through their words and bring their poetry to life on the page as well as off the page. This workshop was developed in association with the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts |
