In his latest book, The Civilian Conservation Corps in Wisconsin: Nature’s Army at Work(Paperback: $18.95; ISBN: 978-0-87020-904-8), acclaimed writer Jerry Apps details the history of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal program in Wisconsin. By utilizing the voices of the young men who worked there, Apps provides his readers with detailed accounts of everyday life in the camps, along with an overview of the CCC program as a whole.
In the wake of The Great Depression, young men were left hungry and jobless until the CCC was founded in 1933. Living in more than 125 camps throughout Wisconsin alone–from Camp Whitnall in Milwaukee County to Camp Horseshoe in Bayfield County–Wisconsin’s “Nature’s Army” worked on environment-related projects that shaped the state’s forests and natural areas as we know them today. With a focus on cleaning up and preserving landscape, and helping improve facilities at and accessibility to natural areas, men planted trees, carved paths, fought soil erosion and more from 1933 until the camps closed in 1942.
By digging deep into the history of Wisconsin’s “Nature’s Army”, Apps rediscovers the CCC’s remaining legacy.
