Historical Society Releases New & Digital Edition of State Textbook
This fall, the Wisconsin Historical Society Press introduces an updated print and digital edition of its definitive Wisconsin history fourth-grade textbook, Wisconsin: Our State, Our Story.
The textbook promotes strong literacy and content skills and follows an inquiry-based approach to learning about history based on the Society Press’s Thinking Like an Historian questions that anchor each chapter and encourage students to consider concepts like cause-effect and change-continuity in learning history
The textbook introduces students to lively stories of the many individuals, groups, and events that shaped Wisconsin’s past — from the retreat of the glaciers more than 10,000 years ago to the diverse state we are today. For example students can:
Color-coded terms, phonetic pronunciations, and meaningful imagery and sidebars are just a few examples of how the design supports literacy and fluency.
The updated textbook is written at an improved fourth-grade reading level and features:
In addition, chapter summaries offer additional resources relevant to chapter topics as well as suggested companion field trips to expand upon lessons at Wisconsin Historical Society sites and museums as well as regional venues.
“Wisconsin: Our State, Our Story” was developed in consultation with five authors and an advisory board of reading specialists, history scholars, curriculum coordinators, and teachers and tested in actual fourth-grade test classrooms. As a result, the book has been designed in an accessible format to encourage multiple learning styles. A companion Student Activity Guide and Teacher’s Edition are also available. In addition, a new Spanish language edition will soon be available.
