Where in Wisconsin is Jerry Apps? At a Book Event Near You!
No worries! Wisconsin’s celebrated rural storyteller Jerry Apps is NOT missing. He is just hard to find this time of year because he is on the road at so many book events — a schedule that is packed even fuller since the 2015 releases of his two new Wisconsin Historical Society Press books: Whispers and Shadows: A Naturalist’s Memoir AND Wisconsin Agriculture: A History.
How busy is Jerry? He is so busy that the Society Press is sending this notice to help everyone keep up with our most popular and prolific author. We, and Jerry, hope to see you at one of these book events this Fall! Unless noted, all events are free and open to the public!
Location: Ramsey Barn at Old World Wisconsin, Eagle, Wis. This event is part of the living history site’s Autumn on the Farms weekend and will be held in the Ramsey Barn as a pre-Harvest Buffet Dinner event. A book signing will follow in the Old World Wisconsin gift shop. Site admission is always highly recommended (but not required) to attend the book talk. Dinner tickets are sold separately.

Wisconsin’s Secretary of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection, Ben Brancel, Dean Kathryn VandenBosch of the UW-Madison College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, Dr. John M. Shutske, Director of the UW-Extension, and Dr. Ellsworth Brown, The Ruth and Hartley Barker Director of the Wisconsin Historical Society, are also participating in this joint Wisconsin Book Festival & Wisconsin Science Festival book talk event. A book signing will follow.
Sunday, Oct. 25, 2015: Schlitz Audubon Nature Center “Whispers and Shadows” Talk
Time: 2 pm
Location: Schlitz Audubon Nature Center, 1111 Brown Deer Rd., Milwaukee, Wis. Drawing from his nature memoir, Apps will explore such topics as the human need for wilderness, rediscovering a sense of wonder, and his father’s advice to “listen for the whispers” for nature’s deepest lessons. A book signing will follow. Admission is free to SANC members. Nature Center admission required ($8 for adults, $5 for youth and active duty/veterans).
Sunday, Nov. 1, 2015: Gard’s Romance of Wisconsin Place Names” with Jerry Apps
Time: 2 pm
Location: The Gard Theater, 111 E. Jefferson St., Spring Green, Wis. Celebrated rural historian Jerry Apps, a former student of Robert Gard’s who wrote the new foreword for Gard’s recently reprinted classic “Romance of Wisconsin Place Names,” will share his memories of the well-known writer and educator, at the theater named in Gard’s honor. This event is sponsored by Arcadia Books, Spring Green.
Thursday, Nov. 5, 2015: “Whispers and Shadows” Book Talk & Signing
Time: 7 pm
Location: Baraboo Public Library, 230 4th Ave., Baraboo, Wis.
Location: Edgerton High School, Edgerton, Wis. The Edgerton Sterling North Book and Film Festival welcomes Jerry Apps to share nature stories and lessons drawn from his memoir “Whispers and Shadows.” The event will feature highlights from his newest Wisconsin Public Television documentary, “The Land with Jerry Apps,” which debuts in November. A book signing will follow.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Celebrated rural historian Jerry Apps has published 11 non-fiction books with the Wisconsin Historical Society Press, and counting! In addition, three of his Society Press books have been the inspiration for Wisconsin Public Television documentaries, including “A Farm Story with Jerry Apps,” the Emmy Award-winning “A Farm Winter with Jerry Apps,” and the upcoming “The Land with Jerry Apps,” which debuts next month.
Born and raised on a central Wisconsin farm, Jerry Apps is a former county extension agent and professor emeritus for the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is the author of more than forty fiction, nonfiction, and children’s books with topics ranging from barns and cheese factories to farming with horses and the Ringling Brothers circus. He and his wife, Ruth, have three grown children, seven grandchildren, and one great-grandson. They divide their time between their home in Madison and their farm, Roshara, in Waushara County.
